“I bought this BT&C shellac flakes at my local Woodcraft store. I stored the unopened bag in my basement for about 1 year until I used it this past weekend. Iâ€™ve used Zinsser brand pre-mixed shellac and itâ€™s a good product, but you canâ€™t control the cut size (1, 2, or 3 pound) and I felt I needed to use it within 6-months which I believe is the suggested shelf life of an open can. Iâ€™m very satisfied with the results of this BT&C product. I was worried about flakes not fully dissolving after reading some reviews. I didnâ€™t have to grind them finer or anything. I used it right out of the bag. I had to continue to stir it every so often to make sure it doesnâ€™t clump up and turn gummy. After about 3 hours or so, the flakes were completely dissolved into the alcohol solution. I strained my mixture into a cheese cloth and there were three minuscule flakes left. Almost everything totally dissolved. FYI- I purchased denatured alcohol at a big box store. I made a 2-pound cut, then poured some of that solution with more alcohol to make a 1-pound cut for the first coat. I like the way the shellac is applied and I actually enjoy the smell of the shellac. Not very offensive VOCs like polyurethane. My 2nd and 3rd layers were made with probably a 1.5 pound cut. Overall, Iâ€™m very happy with this product.”
