I made a blanket chest as one of my first furniture projects in about 30 years and I wanted a medium-duty finish that didn't require special equipment or PPE to apply. After doing a ton of research online and trying a lot of samples I decided to give old-fashioned shellac a try and am glad I did. Two ounces of this in a jar with eight ounces of denatured alcohol, gave it a good shake and stir 3-4 times over a day or two, and I had a nice whiskey-colored fully dissolved liquid. In hindsight I should have cut it more (especially for the first coat) but even doing every step of this kind of half-$#@ed using an old shirt as an applicator gave me nice results after two coats. The amber flakes have a very subtle color that worked really well with the red oak to bring out its natural color. I'm sure with another three or ten coats I could build up more gloss but 2-3 coats was enough to look "finished" for maybe $8-10 in material cost on a good-size (~2x2x4' chest) piece. I definitely see this becoming a go-to finish for me where water resistance and such aren't a necessity.

The flakes dissolved quickly. Like the color and the ease of use when finishing turnings.
