The head holds the chisels consistently square, but it does allow the chisels to slide back. I hit the sides that contact the chisel with a little coarse sandpaper to scuff them up and I use soft jaw pliers to tighten the knob without damaging it and it works fine with those modifications. It doesn't feel like I have to crank it down so much that it risks distorting or wearing out the mechanism.

Disappointed. The jaws cannot hold chisel square. Edges can be wildly inconsistent and skewed. Quite expensive for a product that fails at its primary job.

As you sharpen, your chisel will move backwards in the guide very slowly without your realizing it. You wind up with facets across the bevel representing every time the chisel moved and thus changed the honing angle. I've tried everything including cramping down on the knurled knob with pliers, but the guide jaws are not strong enough to hold the chisel. Pretty expensive waste of money for a guide that doesn't work. Veritas has come out with a side-clamping guide, which is a separate guide and not an attachment to the Mk II, so I am wondering if they know the Mk II narrow tool guide is flawed. However, they're still selling it so I don't know.

I've had the original Veritas jig for years. It's great for plane blades and larger chisels. However, the smaller chisels would move on occasion giving me a skewed edge. I finally broke down and bought this narrow honing guide and it works like a charm. It holds the chisel from the sides, not the top and bottom. I can now sharpen all my tools and it only takes about 10 seconds to switch back to original jig. Once again, I am delightfully happy with the Veritas quality. I'm very happy with this purchase. Did I mention how happy I am?
