rarived ready to use out of the box, super sharp and mirrored finished on the back. The handle isn't as smooth as some (sliver free), and that gives it a great grip that doesn't slip.

I'm a new woodworker, and didn't know which bevel chisels would work best for me. So I bought one of many different kinds, from $20 Amazon set of 4, antique Stanley 720, Lie Nielsen, Narex, Japanese. Pfeil has become my goto choice. First and foremost, they take a keen edge sharper than any other chisel. The Pfeil gives a glass finish on my endgrain cuts that none of the other chisels come close to. Their bevel chisels are thin, so they give me a clean cut in my dovetail corners. They are smaller and lighter than some of the other chisels, so they are easier to manage for fine paring. I'm not a fan of the feel of the octagonal handle, but it doesn't slip in my hands so I have good control over it, that's what I'm looking for. I'm going to buy the set.

I'm shocked by the poor reviews on these. I have been using these for 5 years and I struggle to consider other brands. Every one was perfectly flat backed. They seemed sharp but I never trust factory sharp. The handles are unfinished as I prefer for a better grip and the octagonal shape gives me more control of the chisel. I have been impressed with how well the edge holds up even though I am working with pretty hard woods (hard maple, ash, oak, birch, hickory and pecan). These are my primary chisels and I am a full time furniture maker that uses hand tools heavily

All the non-Japanese chisels I own are Pfeil. They are great chisels. I have never had a problem with the backs not being flat. I'm wondering if the other reviewer had a stone that wasn't flat. I don't expect anything to be razor sharp out of the box. The most important skill of woodworking is learning how to sharpen. The handles aren't finished, which is fine by me. I'd rather do a quick sand and dunk then in boiled lindseed oil or Danish oil than have them sprayed with lacquer from the factory. These are lifetime chisels.

Very good chisel set. I don't know who has it out for Pfeil, but a few poor reviews by the same person here are inconsistent with my experience with Pfeil, and with dozens of other reviews on different sites. One of the best chisel sets out there, even if they are a bit pricey.

The backs of tjese chisels are not flat on the worst kind of way. It's almost as if they put a back bevel on them at the bactory. Not worth the time it takes to flatten them.

Item way over price for the quality of this item. Should not be over $100. The chisels are not sharp contrary to the description. Handles are not smooth sanded; have to watch out for splinters while using. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this item to anyone. There are much better chisels out in the market.
