Spectacular piece of wood. Re-sawed nicely into book-match configuration. A pleasure to work with. Sanded to 400 grit surface, applied 4 coats of spray lacquer, and finished with 2000 grit sandpaper. Beautiful,,

Olive wood is one of the most beautiful woods in the world…and priced way too high for most hobbyists to afford. This was set at half-price, and I really couldn’t pass it up. It has a Janka hardness of 2700, so quite hard by anyones standard. It is roughly three times harder than oak, has finer grain and wild figure, so doesn’t absorb liquid or moisture readily. The tree grows quite slowly as well, and things that grow slowly tend to be harder and more beautiful. I use it for all manner of projects, but sparingly because it’s so beautiful and normally so expensive. Some people use it for cutting boards, which is certainly fine to do, but paired with other woods of similar hardness is easy to accomplish. Cocobolo, Rosewood, Osage Orange, Jatoba and Bubinga, among others, are easily paired with Olive wood in terms of the Janka hardness. All that limits you is your imagination. Ipe is way too hard for a cutting boards at about 3510, but if you use it for a cutting board, you’ll be sharpening your knives quite frequently. I love wood of all types, but Olive wood is one of my favorites.
