The weakest part of this design is the tenon required, if the bushings recommend had a slide ring to measure the tenon length and shoulder diameter (like the European kit does) it would have made it world's easier to cut. The instructions are a little confusing on assembly and reads like the individual who wrote it already knows how to put this kit together but overlooks small details that they do without thinking so they don't include them. I've made several other kits from this brand but this one was the most difficult to assemble and get working properly. Would not recommend.

Once I cracked the bag open and looked up the instructions online and saw that you had to cut a tenon I kinda rolled my eyes. Most of the other manufacturers have moved away from this as they can be problematic, especially if you don't cut a perfectly straight tenon (I use my parting tool to cut away some extra under the tenon in an inverted slope towards the tube to make sure it will sit flush.) As the other reviews have said, the fit on this kit is just barely off. I had a gap between the cap and bottom and ended up having to sand down the top part of the twist mechanism to get it to sit flush-ish. My cap blank was the length specified in the instructions as was my bottom blank. Seems they need to go back and check the fit of this kit. It's a shame, because it is actually a nice looking pen when it's finished.

This is a great design with the look of a cigar in a smaller size and shirt enough that it rides well in a shirt pocket. Unfortunately as mentioned above the tenon makes it impossible to turn to the bushing (which also isn't what's pictured in the instructions) so what could be a $40 pen now doesn't line up with the center band. Completely assembled both and one semi-works while the other won't extend or retract, it only unscrews and separates. Too bad I wasted $23 on the kits and $22 on the burl blanks, not to mention the time of creating a six piece blank for one of them with the burl. Almost $50 and several hours I'll never get back.

I am relatively new to making pens, and this took me a pen or two to figure out what I was doing wrong. I was having problems with the twist mechanism and the pen would rather separate the cap from the body than actually work like it is supposed to. I have found that when assembling the Pen, it is best to screw the twist mechanism fully onto the twist adapter, then press it into cap. This ensures that the pen will not want to separate every time you try to retract the pen. This is just my experience, and I hope it helps.

The instructions are not very good , the tenon that is part of the procedures introduces potential problems. There are gaps in the completed pen. There's no accurate way to align the designs from the cap to the body prior to assembly. Nice sized pen but poor execution from instruction to tenon. Whenever I have run into a pen kit that introduces a tenon mid way between cap and body I have run into problems That's my 2 cents, but your mileage may vary.
