I've made two of these now, and neither works. Something is somehow binding, and you can't twist it to extend or retract the refill. I thought I might have gotten the tenon too short in the first one, so I made the second tenon longer. Still didn't work. This is a design flaw, in my opinion. No wonder they're on clearance. I've been turning pens since 1999, and have made literally thousands. So it's not due to a lack of experience.

This kit makes a nice size pen, however I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. Look at the instruction sheet. Once the top barrel is turned, It requires a tenon cut that is .258 inches wide. This needs to be a very precise dimension. Might be easy if you're using a metal lathe. I bought two of these for my first pens kits and of course ruined one (cut the tenon a little too short but didn't realize it was so critical). Also didn't see the other review about the assembly clarification. That may have saved my bacon, but I'm not sure. I've since ordered some other kits that don't require a tenon. I'll save the other kit and maybe try it again some day.

This is a great pen for those that want a smaller lighter cigar style. A bit more difficult to make but is worth it for a small style parker refill pen. However the directions are not the best way to assemble the pen. If you put the pen transmission in the cap as the directions state the depth is extremely critical and it is very likely that the pen will twist easily. It is far better to assemble the body first with the screwed on transmission then press the assembled cap over leaving a very small gap between the cap and body.
