“After making a couple of these and finding the best way for Me, this kit is a lot of fun. I first drill out the block with a 7/8" forstner bit and then I rough the wood down to size. The best way that I've found to finish the handle is to transfer the carved piece over to a 1" piece of birch that has been turned down to 7/8". With a smooth wrap of tape around the birch to keep the handle from slipping around, I slide the handle onto the birch for sanding and finishing. A nice piece of exotic hardwood sanded out with 5000 grit paper with a Shellawax finish makes these "less is more" lighters beautiful conversation pieces. I have mine modestly priced at $60, but I've seen other Makers selling them for as much as $100.”

“The kit comes with no instructions on how to turn the stock, no problem. Here's how I do them, put a pice of stock in the chuck, turn the piece to desired size, (use calipers to determine this if needed) measure for length between the top and bottom of lighter, this is done with the bottom screwed in remember, then use a parting tool to cut into the piece 1/2 way through then do your sanding polishing, be sure to slightly chamfer both ends, the LAST thing I do is then use the 22mm bore bit to drill it out and it pops off right at the parting tool mark ðŸ˜‰, sand the outside brass body of lighter to give scuffing for 5 minute epoxy to adhere to and slide the sleeve onto body, wipe away any excess epoxy, done. always test fit body before mixing epoxy in case minore sandimg is needed to ensure the lighter end cap can be screwed on to a perfect fit ðŸ‘”

“Read reviews here and decided not to approach it as a pen. The bottle stopper stock I used was long enough for me to 1st create a tenon that I could then insert in the chuck to turn and bore. Interesting my Woodcraft store carried this kit but not the 22mm bore bit, only a forstner bit. Wish I could post a pic.”

“Wanted to make a couple as gifts. Made one. Looked up directions for it on Rockler Woodworking. They require you to buy a separate mandrill. Even then, carving around a 22m boring hole and trying to make it aesthetic with the lighter container gets pretty shaky considering you're basically cutting it down to veneer size.”

“The kit would look amazing if it turned out like the pics. I have made my own bushy big a with plastic rods. I tried it on a jam chuck. I asked the guy in my local woodcraft and he didnâ€™t know what to do. There arenâ€™t any brass tubes like many other kids. So once you bore the wood and start turning thereâ€™s nothing to give it support I tried 5 times on quality wood blanks and they all crack. Give better instructions (any instructions would be a start) and made a vid of one of your guys doing it for all of us to follow. This one is hard.”

“Ordered 4 of these to make as gifts. Kits arrived soon after ordering but came with no instructions on how to turn wood for body of lighter. I contacted the help desk and was told I would have to create my own blocks and bushing to be able to turn the wood. The gentleman I spoke to on the help desk thought it was odd that this kit had no instructions on how to proceed. I kept 1 of the 4 to turn at a later date and will be returning the remaining 3.”
