Fitting it together was quick and easy. I was not aware that once the barrel is in place, it cannot be removed.

This is over-complicated, poorly-designed, and then poorly-moidified by Woodcraft to jury-rig SAE drill bits to fit a metric set. It requires 4 different bits (they only show 3 on the main page, but the instructions have 4), none of which quite fit since it is a metric set (which they don't tell you 'till the end of the insructions). If you follow the instructions perfectly, the top is a really sloppy fit to the base (I custom-cut the hole when it gets close to the top). It is all plastic except for the rod and grinding wheel, and the metal rod goes into a pastic hole (which I guarantee will wear out, it has happened on other grinders I've gotten from Woodcraft that were plastic). You are supposed to grind off parts of the plastic to force it to fit the SAE holes, but since the bits they have you get (and I literally bought them from Woodcraft even though I had them in my other sets) are too big and if you grind off the plastic it will be too loose in the hole. The worst part about the whole thing is that they don't give you the correct metric sizes (I have plenty of metric bits). I realize that I could measure them and figure it out, but I just plan to never buy that kit again.

I have made more than 100 pepper mills over the last ten years and I have used this style mechanism ( another brand). I have not had any problems with them. Last year when woodcraft started offering this mechanism, I decided to give them a try and purchased 2. Unfortunately, I am very disappointed. The top of the pepper mill slips off of the shaft very easily, the fit is not enough to hold the body of the pepper mill in place. I measured the force required to separate the top from the body ( required to fill the grinder ), and compared it to other brand. Wood River: 1.2 pounds pounds of force The other brand: 3.4 pounds of force I will not be able to use Wood River mechanism in my pepper mills.
