This kit is great, and it can be made as more than a turning project. I made my shape octagonal on the table saw, bypassing the lathe. It takes on a whole new form this way. And since the metal tops are the same for both salt and pepper, I differentiated them by making the salt shaker with a light wood and the pepper shaker with a dark wood.

As mentioned before, the sleeves are too big for the 1" bore hole, so extensive sanding with frequent tests is necessary. If you think you might want to bypass using the sleeves, you'll find that the rubber stoppers are too much less that the 1" bore so they don't stay in. They need to be inserted into the sleeve.

These are perfect, I have made six so far. Some comments have pointed out: "... the stainless steel inserts are larger than 1” diameter". Yes, but while I am turning the wood blank on my lathe it is easy to slightly enlarge the 1" bore. I use a round scraper.

Like other reviewers have said, the stainless steel inserts are larger than 1” diameter, so they don’t fit in the bored holes. I spent a LOT of time sanding the inside of the holes to get the tubes to fit, but I ruined the most recent unit I made because I couldn’t get the tube inside the turning before the glue set. Several hours of work, dollars for the kit, and wood wasted. Overall, a nice idea but poorly manufactured. I don’t recommend.

These look perfect for my project. Not sure why the tubes are needed? Are salt and maple incompatible? I mainly wanted the stainless tops that are not marked “S” and “P”. Got what I wanted.

Tubes fit the 1" hole kind of tight, but that was OK. The tops on the other hand had to have a bit of manipulation to get them to fit in the tubes. They were just slightly too large and had to play around with some pliers to finally get them seated. Quality control on sizing leaves a little to be desired.
