To follow up on dv from HANNIBAL's comment, I found a way to align the grain or pattern of the barrels: After pressing the Threaded Center Band into the lower barrel leave out the next step of putting the refill and spring into the lower barrel, it can be done later Thread the Threaded Coupler onto the Threaded Center Band finger tight By hand, press the upper barrel onto the Threaded Coupler, with the grain (or pattern) in the proper alignment Unscrew the upper barrel with the Threaded Coupler still in place Without moving the Threaded Coupler, press it into the upper barrel The grain will now line up when the pen is assembled I also assemble the pen to locate the best position for the clip before pressing the clip in place”
