I have owned the 1840 for several months. Before the purchase I had been using the lathe feature of a popular does everything machine which was simply not heavy or stiff enough to be great. I researched lathes with 16-18 inch swings and 24-44 inch lengths. After reading and watching everything I could find, I decided the Jet 1840 was the no frills solid machine that fit my needs. The others had fancy electrical or mechanical features but they all seemed to have one basic weakness like a banjo or tail stock that didn't lock well or a banjo that didn't hold the tool rest well. The Jet 1840 had these issues designed out so I headed to Woodcraft where I spoke to the turning instructor who also owned a Jet 1840. His input, the 10% Jet discount at the time, and free shipping to the store sealed the deal. After some bead and cove practice I turned a salt shaker, pepper mill, a plate, and a mallet and I couldn't be happier. It has very low vibration and it is very quiet. Plenty of power as well. The head stock, tail stock and banjo are easy to move and stay where you put them. The quill turns very smoothly with a nice long travel. I did buy a 6" tool rest to better accommodate smaller work pieces. I have a small shop so I purchased a furniture moving kit with a pry bar and 4 sets of wheels. I can move the lathe out of the way when I'm not using it, bit I sit it directly on the floor when in use. When it arrived the digital readout was erratic, but a couple of calls to Jet Service and we worked that out. The phone service folks at Jet were very helpful. The only odd thing is that there is no master on/off switch. As long as the machine is plugged in the LED readout is on. I just unplug the machine when not in use which is my normal practice anyway. I'd write more, but I have a bowl blank calling my name.

From the ordering experience with Woodcraft to the delivery experience from the courier to Jet’s unresponsive customer/tech support and poor fit and finish on the lathe, if I were doing it again, I would look elsewhere!
