“I recently purchased two 1 1/2" x 36" hard maple dowel. I cut one dowel in half and soaked both pieces in mineral oil for about 72 hours. I successfully cut screw threads on one of the pieces - perfect threads, no tear-out. Not so with the second 18" section. Tear-out galore. The reason? I failed to check the diameter; the rod had an inconsistent diameter, one end was fine while the other was oversized. Why can't size specifications be checked before shipment?”

“I know lots of wood is sold in nominal sizes, but I expected hardwood, presanded dowels would actually be the diameter labeled. If they're machining them already, why leave them just a little bit bigger than the stated diameter. It would have been easier to simply turn my own 1 1/2" dowel than trying to get this dowel down to size.”
