This is not genuine Lignum Vitae (Guaiacum Officiniale), it is most likely Argentine Lignum Vitae, (Plectrocarpa Sarmientoi). After reading "How to tell genuine Lignum Vitae from Argentine Lignum Vitae" on The Wood Database. I was completely surprised to find Lignum Vitae (Guaiacum Officiniale) at my local Woodcraft store because it is supposed to be on the CITES list as endangered in about 1975 as well as Argentine Lignum Vitae (Plectrocarpa Sarmientoi) in about 2005. According to The Wood Database the most certain way to differentiate is by examining the end wood grain, and from what can see based on the pictures of the examples shown, this piece is definitely, in my opinion, Argentine Lignum Vitae (Plectrocarpa Sarmientoi). So perhaps since both species are on the CITES list, it seems plausible that this another closely related wood species that is neither Lignum Vitae (Guaiacum Officiniale) or Argentine Lignum Vitae (Plectrocarpa Sarmientoi)? At any rate, This a beautiful sample of this wood whatever it technically is.
