I purchased this product to keep my Shapton 1000/6000/16000 stones flat, as this product is known for its flatness. The product has not disappointed in the slightest at doing it's job on my Shaptons, and I have also used it to get an initial bevel on some old vintage plane blades I have acquired. Mine was dead flat. Recommend keeping it rust free using a quality rust preventative while using. Also strongly recommend going over both surfaces completely with an old blade or old flat steel block to knock down any stray grit that may be protruding from manufacture. This should only need to be done once before initial use.

I usually do not write too many reviews, especially bad ones, but this one I felt I needed to. I would not recommend this plate. I was really excited thinking I finally will have a very flat diamond sharpeing plate. When I got mine, it had a couple dings on the 300 grit side with smudges and one on the back. Almost like something heavy landed on it. Not from packaging or being sent from Wood Craft. Most like quality control in China. But the biggest issues is that it is not flat, not at all. Length wise, I see small valleys in the middle and drops off bad on both ends from the straight edge. Across the plate shows a concavity, very noticeable. This would not flattening anything. I know, I decided to see if this was actually the case. It would cause a convexity if going all the way across on the blade I was flattening because it would hit the end of the blade about 1.5 cm and then the other side of the plate would wear 1.5 cm the middle of the blade, but nothing in the middle!. This is on both sides! And to think I was going to use it lapping. I am going with Shapton stones and lapping plate. Yeah, I have spent a bunch of money to find out you have to spend a bunch of money if you want flat! Do not buy this Trend product, my cheaper diamond plates are actually more flat than this thing. I might even throw it in the trash to avoid anyone using it because it is that bad. And since I thought to try it and hoped for it to correct itself by breaking it in, I cannot return it. Do not make the same mistakes I have made. You really do have to pay if you want flat. If lapping, the stones will only be as flat as the lapping plate used. Simple as that. In this case, the stone would have a concavity in the middle of the stone and ridges on the ends. Good Luck!
