Shogun Temagari Traditional Japanese Greenwood Saw 360mm Reviews

The Japanese Temagari is the traditional equivalent of a small chainsaw, designed for felling small trees and cutting them up. The pitch, tooth geometry and ergonomics have all been developed to excel at one task - crosscutting green wood. The teeth are very aggressive - 4.5 - 5.5 tpi progressive pitch, very little rake (I'm guessing 5 degrees) quite a lot of slope and absolutely masses of fleam. The toothed edge is 360mm, about 14", the whole saw is just under two feet. The blade is taper ground, both from teeth to spine and handle to tip, but well tensioned so it has a nice stiff springiness. This is a really nice saw, please don't forget to oil the blade before you put it away.

I have a chain saw but I don't like it. I've also some experience of using Japanese pull-saws so, when I saw this, I thought it would be exactly what I was looking for. However, I find that on larger logs (20mm diameter and above) it starts well, giving a nice clean straight cut but it then starts to "stick" when it comes to the heartwood. I find that I have to switch to my old "Spear and Jackson" bowsaw as that cuts through the wetter wood quicker and with far less effort. I really, really wanted this to be as good as the pull-saws that I use for everyday carpentry but it's not doing it for me.

Absolutely unbelievable. I took this thing out for a test as I was having my axes re-handled and I needed to harvest some wood. WOW: I’m talking British ASH , HARDWOOD trees 10-14 inches in diameter and it cut through them like butter , felled them and quartered them up in no time. With how delicate the handle and hafting looks to the handle , I was anticipating the blade snapping or the handle coming off every-time i cut a tree , and it NEVER even budged. It’s like an illusion almost, this saw is absolutely ridiculously good. Best 40 quid I’ve ever spent on a tool. Just buy one honestly don’t even question me, and you’ll be back here leaving a review.

This is a gorgeous beauty, it saws through softwood with more ferocity and efficiency than I thought possible from a hand saw. I've found it difficult to hold myself back, sawing through branches left, right and above, sawing through ash, laurel, hydrangea, buddleia, even an oak tree. Chainsaws are for chumps
