MJ Platt & Co. B Square Reviews

4.3 Rating 19 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

Named for its shape, the B square is a tool for 'feeling' square as much as seeing it, particularly in situations where you are eyeballing for square in two axis at once. The bows allow it to be held comfortably in a variety of positions and also brace the working faces giving it an inherently rigid form. The square is intended to augment the user's sensory accuracy for the final cuts of a chiselling operation that produce the mating surfaces of joints, after the bulk of the waste has been removed. For example paring the shoulders of a tenon to the gauge line, or trimming the ends of a mortice plumb. You can also use it with a fine saw for the first few strokes that establish a nice vertical kerf, or just use it as a square to check your work.

I purchased the B Square and cannot fault the quality of its manufacture, however its about 20-30% too small for guys with big hands and large fingers. Worth keeping, I just wish it was bigger.

The tool is fantastic. Great for small areas. That said, the customer service far exceeds the quality of the tool. I tried several times to place my order and was unable to complete the transaction. Being in the USA, the time difference made it difficult to communticate in a timely manner. I do not now what position Molly has in Workshop Heaven; but she got right back to me and within two days my order was on it's way. Great companies have great people.

One has got to appreciate the design, the casting, the finish and the packaging of this awsome little tool as well as the effort spent to bring it to the market I would like versions at 45 degrees: mitre and bevel please and maybe a tweak: with thicker bases we could have two holes to hold similar clamps like Besseys's TK6: I know this tool was designed as a B square...to be hold with fingers but...it would just increase its flexibility. Just a few ideas! Maybe I'll get bonus points for it ;) I have been using it as intended for chiselling, sawing and checking the squareness of some other tools like router fences and during assembly and I find it a fantastic and convenient piece of kit - price wise: you have to judge it yourself but this is a small batch production, unique and exclusive tool. The more you use the cheaper it will get and it will never need maintenance and likely will remain is useable shape forever: a heirloom and heritage tool already... a lot to like already!

A great tool with one big con, if you have a little bit chubby fingers. You simply cannot get them in. The two holes should have been 1/4 of an inch larger, then anyone could have used it. I will probably give mine to someone who have smaller hands and hop that they will upgrade it an make one with bigger holes.

Really nice addition to my bench. Easy fit in the hand and really usefull on those small but vital jobs. Ive just used it for checking two small dovetailed drawers and it was perfect. Nicely engineered too.

I received my MJ Platt & Co B Square and the quality of the square for precision and finish is excellent. As far as its functionality, it is a bit disappointing for me at its higher price point, as there are simple shop made options, or a smalll, flat 90° square ( like a dovetail one, but 90°) that would perform similarly. Perhaps a video of it in use for various things that I might be missing, or some instructions with photos would be helpful additions. I was hoping it would be slightly larger ( wider) to help with its registration. As far as its use sawing with a backsaw, it does provide 90° registration vertically for the saw blade, but not horizontally to the front face, so one still has to follow their marked 90° line marked across the wood's edge. I am an experienced handtool woodworker and these comments are offered as candid, not critical ones. Thank you. Cheers.

While the quality of this tool is obvious; and honestly I am happy with the purchase, as a man with larger hands I just feel this could have been about 20-30% bigger than what turned up. For quality of material, finish, and presentation however it gets a full 5* from me
