Quangsheng No. 4-1/2 Bedrock Pattern Smoothing Plane Reviews

5 Rating 3 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

Larger and heavier than a No.4, the Quangsheng No.4½ smoother takes the same broad 2⅜" iron as the 5½ and 6.
Aside from the convenience of interchangeable irons, the main benefit of a large smoothing plane is that you can take a broader shaving, so it covers more ground in fewer passes than a 4 or 3. The other advantage is its weight – at just under 6lb it has plenty of mass, giving it the same planted feel as an infill plane.
Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'. The frog can also be adjusted to widen or narrow the mouth of the plane without the need to remove the irons. Simply loosen the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjust the central screw to set your desired mouth opening and then nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, much more accurate, and less likely to damage the cutting edge.

Superb quality at this price point. Very well made - the sole needed very light work with lapping film to get it perfectly flat. The bedrock system and the ability to adjust the frog without disturbing the iron and chipbreaker is very useful. It's a substantial weight, making it feel stable in use.

Super quick delivery, and the plane needed very little fettling as it came in with a very flat sole and frog. The only thing I had to work on was the cap iron wasn't mating perfectly but took me only a couple mins to take care of that. Wasn't expecting to have this little to do at this price range. As with any plane, the blade comes with a nicely machined primary bevel ready for sharpening/honing. In terms of planing, once properly sharpened it worked perfectly, the added weight is helpful in some situations. It plays to the strengths of a 4 1/2.

Wow, wow, wow.. first impressions count, they say! I’m really happy with the quality of this plane. Well engineered and easy to get fab results! After a bit of cleaning off the oil, as expected, and a sharpening session, it produced the most marvellous shavings and leaves a super smooth finish on the wood! A steep price, but also excellent results
