Quangsheng Low Angle Block Plane (Type 3) Reviews

5 Rating 2 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

One of our most popular tools, the Quangsheng low angle block plane is a really useful piece of kit. Block planes tend to be among the first tools that people buy, they are a staple of the basic toolkit for most types of woodworking.
Block planes are used for chamfering waste to eliminate breakout, tidying up the ends of boards after cutting to length, and fixing any slight inaccuracies from the earlier stages of production. The short sole makes them ideal for tidying up little patches of tearout and their relatively light weight means that after a while you almost use them without thinking.
Specifications:
Bronze cap and brass fittings
T10 iron hardened to RC60-63
Sole Dimensions: 6½" x 1¾" (165mm x 44mm)
Bedding angle: 12 degrees
Primary bevel: 25 degrees
Supplied as standard with the 25 degree iron
Please note that we are unable to ship Quangsheng products to North America due to retail exclusivity restrictions.

A very well made little plane. The low angle bevel-up blade shears effortlessly end grain, leaving a mirror-like finish. I use this plane exclusively with my shooting board and it's a joy to use.

I own a lot of planes (too many?) from Stanley, Record, Clifton, Veritas, Lie Neilson, etc. and I have to say this one is truly excellent. I bought it with 3 blades and it took me longer to get the diamond sharpening plates and water stone out and set up than it took to flatten and polish the back of all three blades using the ruler method. Literally 1 minute per blade, they were all flat out of the box and were quickly polished to 10,000. Add a quick secondary bevel and I was good to go (needed to remove the shipping oil coating too). The main body of the plane appears well made and functions well. In terms of overall quality I don't really see a meaningful difference between this and my Lie Neilson rebate low angle block. Sure I'll do some fettling at some point but I'm certainly in no hurry as it works well from the box. I think all planes need sharpening before use. My only gripe; the blades are a different fit to my Quangseng std angle block plane , bought about 6 weeks before this one. This may be because I bought them from different suppliers, I do find Quangseng planes vary from supplier to supplier. This one is great. Highly recommended
