“Sir Tim is extremely eloquent (of course he would be as a writer) in portraying the many aspects of musical theatre from its concept right through to its conclusion. He throws the spotlight onto the joy, the struggles, the failure and the success from an overview to a microscopic assessment of many details. Although I gained a great deal of insight through his interviews and experimental episodes, I gained the most from his own personal anecdotes, recollections and experiences - drawn from a wide experience of working in the field - and how he drew those together as guidance for those who follow him. It was particularly interesting for me as a songwriter, to see how he transitioned from being a songwriter to a lyricist in an extrnsive team drawn together from all spheres for the musicals he pioneered. It felt to me as though I was living through his experiences with him. A remarkable experience for me.”

“An interesting overview of what writing for musical theatre is about. Some useful advice about writing lyrics. I didn't find the last sections about auditions and performance useful. I guess they were unscripted so the content was very generic and could have been left out. I struggled to get to the end.”
