“This course felt really thorough in terms of the subjects it covered. I loved how Julia used examples from her own and other books the whole way through. Not only was this a very effective teaching tool, there was also real joy in it. She was incredibly warm and appealing throughout her presentation. I found the input from the people in related fields (illustrator, agent, editor etc.) in those later sessions really interesting and illuminating. In particular, Axel Scheffler's drafting process was fascinating to see. It's not something an author would normally get a look at. I was expecting a lot from this course, but it was even better than expected.
The one thing I felt was missing was in regards to payment, not necessarily rate of pay, but more how royalties work, how/when they're paid out, how they're divided between author and illustrator etc.”

“I think she has a lot to offer aspiring authors. I was looking for a balanced class,as every book rhymed. I don't know how to translate that into to my work if I don't write in rhyme.”

“Excellent course! Julia knows about children’s book inside out.
I am asking for a refund of $1,497 from ML publishing, by Miriam Laundry and Sharon Jennings, a Canadian company, because their materials are far less useful than Julia’s but 30 times more expensive. I wish I had seen this first.”

“Julia Donaldson's BBC Maestro course on Writing Children's Picture Books is wonderful! The class covers the subject well, answering questions on topics from story structure to working with illustrators. What I really like is Julia Donaldson's approach. Her delivery throughout the course has an almost lyrical quality that reminds me of fairytales—perfect, given the subject matter, thought the actual advice is very practical and useful. She shares the process and approach that have worked for her, along with tips. She also shares what she knows publishers and editors are looking for from new children's book authors based on her work in the industry. It's so valuable to have both of these perspectives. She shares helpful, specific examples frequently–both from her own books and from other children's picture books she loves. Overall, the course is interesting and the information is valuable to anyone interested in writing their own children's picture book.”

“Excellent course but disappointed it didn't go into getting a book published, how to contact a publisher, different ways to get a book published etc.”
