Aromatic oil blend — Canada Balsam, camphor, origanum and rosemary
Not an antibiotic and contains no active pharmaceutical
Use it in the drinking water, on the feed, applied directly or as a warm spray
It is an oil, so it floats — mix it into very warm water, never cold
One teaspoon to one cup of very warm water for a standard adult bird
59ml bottle — the size most keepers keep in the cupboard
59ml aromatic oil blend for poultry
Camphor, rosemary, origanum, Canada Balsam
Mix into very warm water — it will not mix with cold
1 teaspoon per cup of warm water
It floats. That is normal.
This is the question we are asked more than any other, so it is the first thing on the page. VetRx is an oil. It will not dissolve in cold water and it will sit on the surface. That is not a faulty bottle and you have not done anything wrong.
The trick is temperature. Use very warm water — not cold, not boiling — and stir it through. Everything below explains how much to use and the different ways poultry keepers use it.
How much do I use?
For a standard adult bird, one teaspoon of VetRx to one cup of very warm water. Stir it through, then offer it.
Scale the amount down for bantams and smaller birds
Warming the bottle itself in a cup of hot water first makes it easier to pour and mix
Mix it fresh rather than making up a large batch in advance
Always leave a supply of plain fresh water available as well
Read the label and follow the directions on it.
Four ways poultry keepers use it
The label covers the water method. In practice, keepers use it in four different ways depending on what suits them and the bird.
In the waterOne teaspoon per cup of very warm water, as above
On the feedA few drops stirred through
Applied directlyA little on the comb, wattles, chest, under the wings or on the legs
As a warm sprayDiluted in warm water and misted over the birds or through the coop
What is in it
VetRx is a strongly aromatic oil blend. The ingredients are:
Canada Balsam
Camphor Oil
Origanum
Rosemary Oil
3.3% alcohol U.S.P.
It is not an antibiotic and contains no active pharmaceutical. Made in the USA. Suitable for chickens, bantams, ducks, geese, turkeys and game birds.
Dine-A-Chook has imported VetRx for years, and it is one of the longest-standing products on our shelf.
Good husbandry comes first
Keep the coop clean, dry and well ventilated
Separate any bird that is unwell from the rest of the flock
Make sure fresh water is always available
If you are worried about a bird, speak to a vet. VetRx is not a substitute for veterinary care.
How long does a 59ml bottle last?
A 59ml bottle holds roughly twelve teaspoons. Used at one teaspoon per cup of water, that is around a dozen made-up cups — which for most backyard flocks is a long time, because it is used occasionally rather than daily. Kept sealed, in a cool dark cupboard, it has a long shelf life.
Available sizes
59ml$39.95 — the size most people keep in the cupboard
946ml$199.95 — bulk, for larger flocks, breeders and poultry clubs

“Very difficult to administer. Time consuming having to warm it in the cold Tassie climate and it needs a dropper not the current cap. I do however believe it's a good product, sometimes has helped but other times fowl have died so I guess it depends what was wrong with them.”

“I have a girl that went down last Friday, I have treated her for practically everything. The VetRx has been fantastic it helps her to breath easy I also warm a little and put it under her wing. A bit like Vick’s when you have a cold. It’s been 4 days now and she is still with us.”

“A good natural first step to assist with any respiratory discomfort, sneezing or coughing. Gave my hen a few drops of this mixture warm along with oregano oil down the throat and applied it on a cotton ball twice daily to the chest and under the wings- settled down her sporadic cough within a few days. Nice to have a first go to instead of antibiotics, in the event that your hen has a chest disturbance due to dust or eating something that has aggravated her chest. Should see results within 7 days, if not; I’d then see a vet or seek antibiotics.”
