Georgia State Flag History & Meaning
The Georgia state flag has changed multiple times over the years. The first official state flag was established in 1879. This flag resembled the Stars and Bars flag of the Confederacy, except it had a vertical blue stripe across the hoist instead of a blue canton. In 1905, the state seal was added to the blue strip.
Later, in 1956, a new flag was adopted. This flag kept the blue vertical hoist and seal but replaced the red and white stripes with the Confederate Battle Flag. This flag lasted almost 50 years before a new one was adopted in 2001. This new flag consisted mainly of the state seal but was highly criticized and, by 2003, was again replaced.
The 2003 flag is the one we see today, and it is reminiscent of the Confederate Stars and Bars flag. However, this flag includes the coats of arms from the state seal within the canton. Thirteen stars circle the coat of arms to represent Georgia’s place among the original thirteen colonies.
