Lithuania Flag Meaning & History
Lithuania’s first national flag was adopted in 1918, with almost the same design as the modern flag, except with different dimensions. However, the colors yellow, green, and red were suggested as the national colors as early as 1905, since these colors were commonly used in traditional Lithuanian weavings and clothing. Lithuania was occupied alternately by Germany and Russia following World War II, and the use of the national flag was banned from 1940 to 1988. In 1988, the Lithuanian SSR government reinstated the original flag.
The yellow stripe represents the sun and prosperity, while the green is for the countryside, forests, and hope. The red stripe symbolizes the bloodshed and bravery of those who died fighting for Lithuania.
