Flag of the United Kingdom Meaning & History
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland flag was adopted in 1801 and combined the national banners of its original member states: England, Ireland, and Scotland.
The dark blue background and diagonal white stripes of the United Kingdom flag are lifted from Scotland’s St. Andrews Cross flag. The perpendicular red cross represents the English St. George’s Cross flag, while the diagonal red stripes are inspired by the Irish St. Patrick’s Saltire. The modern Irish flag, which is a green, white, and orange tricolor, was adopted later in 1848. Wales, which is now a constituent country within the UK, does not have any unique markings on the Union Jack since it was categorized within the Kingdom of England at the time of the flag’s creation.
