The History Behind the Continental Flag
Many believe that the colonist carried the Continental Flag at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. This battle was the second engagement of the Revolutionary War and is considered one of the bloodiest. Even though the British technically won this battle, it was a massive blow to their military superiority - losing nearly one-third of their men.
There are very few accounts from the Battle of Bunker Hill placing any flag with the colonists. Some of these accounts include letters written by British soldiers who noted a “red” flag but no further description. The primary source for the flag is the painting The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill by artist Jonathan Trumbull - who personally observed the battle through a looking glass.
Despite whether or not the flag was present, the flag still represents the great Continental Army - led by Gen. George Washington - who helped win American freedom.
