Grand Union Flag Meaning & History
The Grand Union flag was the first banner used to represent the original 13 colonies of the USA. It was adopted in 1775, the first year of the American Revolution. Previously, the colonies had been using their own local flags, such as Massachusetts’s Taunton flag, so the Grand Union flag was created as a symbol of unity.
The design incorporated the Royal Union flag used by Great Britain at the time as the canton and added 13 alternating red and white stripes to represent the colonies.
