Jolly Roger Flag Meaning & History
The famous pirate skull flag dates back hundreds of years. Debate still rages today over the origins of the name Jolly Roger itself - but a popular theory is that the name evolved from the French phrase joli rouge, meaning "pretty red." "Pretty red" references a red flag used by French pirates and privateers around the turn of the 18th century. It's thought that the classic skull and crossed bones design of the Jolly Roger flag was first flown by the pirates Black Sam Bellamy, Edward England, and John Taylor, beginning in the 1710s.
