German Army Surplus Winter Hat. Olive. I’ve tried dozens of different winter hats over decades and found these to be the most effective in Northern Europe conditions. If you choose the correct size (not necessarily your head circumference - I go a size up)) they are comfortable and versatile. Ear flaps up they protect your head and tops of your ears; Ear flaps down they protect the back of your neck; cover your ears; cheeks and lower chin; You can also drop the front flap in either mode and protect your brow. Fold the peak down/forward and you get low sun or a head-on wind shield for face/eye protection. The peaks are fairly stiff from new but I have usually added reinforcing machine stitching à là British Army ‘Falklands’ winter hats. Used in conjunction with a lightweight British Army neckroll you get full head and face protection. The hats are not naturally waterproof - no membranes; no coatings; just a hard wearing poly cotton outer shell with a synthetic faux fur liner. BUT! That means that i) they ‘breathe’ - PROPERLY - not limited like hats with the ‘tex’ linings; ii) there’s no problem washing them (repeatedly) when they stink of sweat after repeated, hard use either - like synthetic hats! If heavy rain is an issue you could treat the outer with a repellent (I have used various sprays and waxes with varying degrees of success - but when unsatisfactory- simply wash it out). Or you could just put your jacket hood up! Mega practical; mega good value for money. Plain olive or Flecktarn - take your pick though plain olive across the range of sizes are getting rarer.

Warm, comfortable, no nonsense piece of headgear, perfect for us baldy types on bikes in windy days. Should have bought more than one.

Was actually quite surprised with how warm this is. the ear flaps and the little flap which goes over the back of the head seems to be lined with faux fur, the main hat is lined with some sort of wool blend, so there isnt the worry of your head getting cold being in direct contact with the polycotton outer. i have a 59cm head, but bought the 61 so i can wear it on top of my ski mask for those really cold times. i would reccommend buying 2cm above than the actual size of your head. also, dont include the 'over ear' part when doing a measurement, the hat sits around the eyebrow level.
