The Arkansas Soft Stone is the starting part of the essential stones. I have used Dan’s for years and keep kits stashed all around, office, home and even a travel kit. I have given many of these away as gifts. As I said, it is one of the essential stones. Though these stones can vary in color, almost all I have had are true to grit. They are course and comes in around 600 grit IMHO. Although oil is recommended, I have used these dry and wet with water, depending on the blade. The cells are open so there is build up regardless and you must keep these stones clean in order for them to do the job. Using water does help, you can also use soap or dishwashing liquid to clean. The best cleaner I have found is the rust eraser you can find on Amazon. Water retention is medium as it will absorb some water, but unlike some stones, it is not a thirsty stone. Usually 5 passes or so, then re-wet. I never find an issue knowing where the edge of the blade is and it will bite finding it while freehand sharpening. Once there you will have no issue in staying on target. On a guided system these are flawless. On steel from 1075-S30V you will have no issue with this. This is not for the newer harder steels. They may work, but you will spend a long time there. These stones do not wear quickly as they are dense. You will find many a collection that will have this stone in it 30 years or more. Every home need at least 4.
