“Having had an expensive strap malfunction on what I though was a good quality alto shoulder bag I had a look at what else was out there. I know a couple of pro players and they swear by Hiscox cases. They're hand made and built to protect your instrument from perils like drops or heavy equipment falling on them. When I got mine I was really impressed with how well my Yani alto fitted. It's really snug and that means there's no movement inside the case. The design also creates a small area at the top of the case for accessories and this is sealed off from the intrument when you close the lid, so no danger of a wayward mouthpiece rattling over the body of the instrument. I expected it to be heavier, but it's actually not that much, and the handle makes it well balanced to carry. They also provide a good strap with the nice detail of a caribiner-like metal loop that screws tight shut.
When you see top end soft bags at over £300, I think the Hiscox Alto and Tenor rigid cases are actually very good value, and a good deal less than the cost and anguish of the repair I had to get done when my old soft bag failed.”
