About Mike's Dive Store:

Mike’s London Dive Store may have been established for more than thirty years but its history goes back much further than that. It’s founder, big Mike Calder, was the super-salesman at a dive store in Fulham Palace Road in West London. A local lad who was larger in life than in so many ways, he was so successful at serving divers with the equipment that suited their needs best that people beat a path to his door from all over the country.

Mike was a diver and he believed that if his customers were satisfied they’d return. He took the long view. He was eventually so successful that other dive shop owners even protested he was distorting the market.

It was inevitable that he would set up in business for himself and with the help of a local friend started selling dive equipment from a warehouse at Richmond’s waterside. Eventually he moved the business to the more accessible premises it is in today.

Mike was a giant of the UK’s diving industry in many more ways than one and all who knew him were shocked when he was suddenly taken from us long before his time, in 2009.

Still in his early teens, Scuba Steve started diving in the Sinai in 1989, in the days when Red Sea liveaboard operations were truly pioneering. He accompanied skipper Jan Ellingsen on Colona IV on a 1200 nautical mile trip down to the Sudan and learned to dive on the way. A few exciting encounters with grey reef sharks and he was hooked.

He worked alongside Mike and purchased Mike’s Dive Store when it became available. Mike’s son chose to sell to Steve because he could see that Steve had the same passion as his dad for scuba diving and was confident that he would carry on the tradition of good service and advice from a position of a wealth of knowledge very much as his dad had done.

Mike’s Dive Store is not about shifting boxes of product but having the patience to understand the particular needs and wishes of every one of its individual customers. That’s you!

There are very many aspects to the underwater world and Steve has seen most of them. He instils in his staff this philosophy to only sell the right tools for the job and many of the currently regular customers will tell you that it was Mike sold them their first set of diving equipment. Mike may have passed away but Mike’s Dive Store is alive and well, and Scuba Steve is carrying on the traditions that Mike established for it.

Great looking, lightweight device. Yet to use on a dive due to the lockdown. The features look good and I intend to use it as a back up to my Suunto Core.

My Oceanic DC was coming to the end of it's useful life so I was looking for a new DC. A lot of friends use Suunto so decided to take the plunge. So glad I did, so easy to use and great functionality for both rec and pro divers. Went for the D5 rather than the D6i on recommendation...I can highly recommend this DC. Used t for the first time in Mexico recently and very happy with my choice.

Used it for diving in Fiji and loved it. Easy to set up and use. Perfect size for my wrist.

Neat and compact. But display bright and clear even for my old eyes. So big tick - that was the main requirement. Where I think they fail is having a mineral glass face rather than scratchproof sapphire which is a reasonable expectation at this price point. The scabby film screen protectors debase a lovely product. Yet to use it in anger, but controls seems good to use and navigation intuitive and efficient. Just as well because the handbook is a 'mare. Badly laid out, poorly explained in every way poorer than the handbook for my Zoop. In watch mode the battery seems to last forever with is great for upcoming long haul trips. Setting up the compass including declination very easy. Good use of lubber lines. Supplied straps are standard watch strap length. An extension to cover your wet/dry suit will cost you dollar. Changing straps very easy as promised. Because I dive overseas almost exclusively and rent gear I didn't get the Suunto Tank Pod. No question I'd get it if I had all my own gear, as you are missing out on some key features without. In particular calculating your air consumption and automatically converting that into predicted endurance as well as you no deco limits. Its maybe not the best on the market, but it offers a lot for the price point. The key thing if you are doing 3-4 dives per day will be remembering to charge every day (and then recalibrating your compass)

I have used this on 20 dives so far, and i am impressed with the qaulity of this product. The ability the charge the watch yourself instead of having to send it off to get the battery changed is a step in the right direction. I am also very impressed with the brightness and i have seen some reviews online reguarding the brightness, however on land and in water i have never thought it could of been brighter.. very clear underwater, easy to read. Viberation system is welcome feature. Very impressed with the computer so far!!

I am so happy with this computer. The interface is much clearer than the other models and I love that it is rechargeable - a vast improvement on older models where tracking battery life was more guess work. Note that if you get this and have the olde Suunto Tranmitter, you will also need to upgrade to the Tank Pod for air integration.

As a recreational (advanced) diver, I really needed a dive comp that was easy to use, had a great display and one I could get to understand quickly. I also wanted one that had a bit of future-proofing with air/gas integration. The Suunto D5 is all this, and whilst I have yet to use the air-integration, having now dived with this I am very glad I did get it; I just need the transmitter unit now. On a dive it was very easy to understand and view. It's as easy to read at 33 metres as it is a 3. The back-lit LED screen (as opposed to others I looked at/tried with the old "Casio watch" analogue display), is perfect. I also read up that its algorithms are a bit conservative, but I found it quite decent and not a hindrance. It gives all the warnings/vibrations and times for the deep-stop, and subsequently for the final stop with arrows on the display to ascend/descend. It’s only slightly larger than your average wristwatch and can therefore be used as a great looking timepiece immediately after diving. It’s also slimmer than I expected as some are like a brick. I have also used this for snorkelling/free-diving - after a simple switch on the menu it reboots and is ready for free-diving. It starts recording almost immediately (0.3m under) and then records depth at 0.1m intervals. Overall, it's a fascinating bit of kit and one I have yet to use all features (compass, mixed gas etc.). I would highly recommend this to all divers - it would suit all levels and is worth the extra few pounds over the cheaper-end ones, and it’s probably as good as one that’s around the £1000 mark (compared on the dive boat)…and it’s rechargeable, where others were not. Mike’s Dive Store also did a great deal on the interchangeable coloured straps so people think I’ve bought two of them!

This is a great dive computer, intuitive and easy to programme. Looks great to. After all the marketing, in magazines. Web ads etc. I am really disappointed that Suunto and their partners have not got all the compatible apps ready for it. It’s basically not on any app list to be able to sync with. I have complained and had an apology to say ‘ Suunto are working with their partners to rectify this’ for £600 over six months after release it’s not good enough frankly.
