Baby Chicks: Black Australorp Female Reviews

4.7 Rating 81 Reviews
Our Australorp is a calm, friendly bird with beautiful iridescent black feathers and a bright red comb. As a chick she was a bit skittish but as she grew up she became much more tolerant of handling. She loves her treats and pushes her way to the front to get the best ones. She is a consistent layer and doesn't bully the other birds.

We ordered 3 Autra White day olds over the summer but due to limited quantity they were unable to ship so ‘my pet chicken’ recommended three Australorps instead to go with the other three Road Island Reds. I am so glad they did! Our three Australorp hens are the sweetest and most hardy birds out of the flock. They have started to lay consistent beautiful brown eggs even in the shorter winter daylight. We thought our reds would be the more docile and friendly of the flock but it’s the other way around. Our Australorps love to run over to us and let us hold them whenever we want. I highly recommend these for your flock. Their beautiful black feathers have a green sheen in the daylight and have been a fan favorite of my visitors.

large pretty birds, however, I personally see a couple of down sides. I have two hens and they are aggressive to each other and my six other hens avoid them at all costs. They are from the same egg batch and are just turning seven months old and neither have laid an egg, while all my others lay almost every day. I see reviews and posts saying they need to be eight months old. Hopefully they havent reached "adulthood" yet and they will calm down.

We love our Australorp hen. Just have the 1 but she's friendly and sweet, calm and curious. Nice chicken. She's our second favorite, after the Cuckoo Bluebar who is similar but overly friendly and mellow.

We bought an Australorp day old chick on My Pet Chicken back in April, along with a few other breeds. My chicks arrived prompt, healthy, and happy. They thrived and have been doing amazing ever since! My Australorp was one of the first to start laying (at 5 months old) and is my most consistent layer. She is super sweet, with the exception of bossing around my dog. I've had multiple people comment on how healthy and happy they are. SO happy with My Pet Chicken and in love with Australorps!

My birds are now 13 weeks old and I've just now been able to identify my rooster. I had ordered 8 pullets and 1 cockerel plus 4 Austra White pullets. All came in healthy, happy and spot on as ordered. They eat out of my hand, they're rather friendly, including the rooster, they work and play well with each other. They get excited when I approach because it means a treat of squash, cukes, spinach, mealworms, scratch, etc. Their iridescence pops in the sunlight, especially since there are 9 of them. This is the first time I've ever experienced having chickens and I'm hoping one of them gets broody next year. While I got them for their egg laying, I fully expect them to live out their natural lives without artificial light in the winter. I love these birds.

We bought two back in 2015- I'll be honest- those two were wild chicks as babies and teenagers and young adults. One we lost at a year and a half of age- laying issues. The other is in her third year and is about as close to an ideal hen as one can get. She lays gorgeous extra large brown eggs - goes broody - raises babies- weans them ... goes right back to laying extra large brown eggs - she's probably raised around 30-40% of the chicks we've hatched. I was worried about her wild child ways when she first went broody at around 9 months, but she settled in and is a sheer pleasure whether she's sitting on eggs, raising babies or laying. A lovely lady! We just got 2 more, and they've been super friendly - even though they were raised by a broody hen. They love to sit and have a chat and are always the first ones to jump in my hands. I can't wait to see how they do!
