“I bought a pair of Black Sumatras last year. The male, Java, interacted with the rest of the chickens/roosters on a regular basis, and his cascading tail was simply gorgeous. Unfortunately, he was killed by a predator this summer.
His mate, Thelma, tended to be more of a loner. She did her own thing and was generally skittish. That all changed after the death of Java. She paired up with one of my black Jersey Giants (Louise), and the two of them shared a nest nonstop for the ensuing days. They were so decoy to their mission that I often had to bring them food and water. Fast-forward, and the two hatched a total of four chicks, each one different from the next, and they are terrific mothers. It has been such a pleasure watching them interact both with each other and their little ones.
