“I wanted to come back a do a review of the salmon faverolle rooster. We have had our rooster, Kyle, for about 2.5 years now. I see the reviews of the roos as chickens but never full grown.
Kyle, is a great rooster to the girls (we have 14) he prevents squabbles, helps them find yummy bites, and herds them into the run/coop at night. We have had a couple hawk attacks. While he does not attempt to fight the hawks, he does help them seek safety. Unfortunately, we still have lost a hen or two. I think it’s because he is a large bird and is terrible at running.
He can be aggressive to people and is most aggressive to women. However, I have two young boys and he has never attacked either one. Of course I instruct them to give Kyle lots of space, but Kyle pays no attention to them.
His spurs have remained rounded or dull on the end, so that is a plus.
All in all, Kyle is bearable to deal with despite his mood swings. He’s not overly aggressive and is slow so easy to dodge if need be. Each rooster will be different, but I will say he is for sure more docile than other roosters I’ve seen. It does help that he is a big beautiful bird!”

It sounds like Kyle has embraced many of the classic rooster responsibilities by keeping order among the hens, helping them locate treats, and encouraging everyone back to safety at the end of the day. We also appreciate you sharing your observations during hawk encounters. While many people expect roosters to physically confront predators, a lot of excellent flock protectors actually focus on sounding alarms, gathering hens, and guiding them to cover, which is often the safer and more effective response.
Your experience with temperament is helpful as well. Rooster behavior can vary widely even within the same breed, and confidence, flock dynamics, maturity, and handling all play a role. Giving roosters space and setting respectful boundaries, especially with children, can go a long way in maintaining positive interactions.

She always would talk loudly when picked up and still tends to be my loudest chick, but the more I’ve had her she’s came out of her shell as she sees her sisters getting loving pets she wants some too!
