The depth allows you to adjust how far the radio and intercom sit within the mounts. Some people prefer to have the intercom or radio protrude from the dash mount a bit. The added depth of the cover gives them that option!

“Dumbest thing I've had to order. The new M1 radio is waterproof but apparently the 696 comm module isn't. The "complete" in dash kit for the Can-Am X3 also has gaps around the radio/comm unit.”
