What did you notice about student engagement in the learning with the Walking with an ANZAC kit? They were fascinated. I think it was the combination of having a tangible object to start their research from, and having a website that allowed an easy point of entry into their research.
My students really enjoyed using this kit. They loved having a tangible item to use as the basis of their research. It was great having so much information available online, and with easy links and prompts to more help them start more complex research. I shared my kit out between our three senior classes (Yrs 4-8) which worked out as one item per pair of students, so we all benefited from the kit. Thank you! We did enjoy it. A couple of gems: - one group’s research into telegrams lead my whole class into a deeper understanding of how difficult communication was in those days and exactly why receiving a telegram during the war was generally assumed to be bad news. - another group had the two buttons and struggled initially to work out why they would have been so meaningful when the person wearing them wasn’t even a part of the war - they didn’t actually GO to war. In explaining why someone would be affected by the war when they had siblings or relatives fighting, I commented how it was similar to the Christchurch mosque shootings - it wasn’t just the people AT the mosque who were affected - their friends and relatives were too. This explanation was perfect for this child as his own grandmother had been at one the mosques during the shootings - Now he got it!! Cool kit. Great discussions. The posters, the items and the research really brought the war into focus for my class in a way that I’ve never managed before. Thank you!!

What did you notice about student engagement in the learning with the Walking with an ANZAC kit? They loved the short and sharp facts on the posters as well as the authentic feel of the kit - they loved exploring the kit like a time capsule.
Got the kids to explore the kit 'as historians', working together to identify causes, consequences, significance of WWI to New Zealand from the sources.

What did you notice about student engagement in the learning with the Walking with an ANZAC kit? Students found the variety and quality of the resources provided provoking. There was more than enough for groups and individuals to engage with a unique item or story resulting in unique learning pathways.
The tangible nature of the resource allowed for genuine exploration and inquiry. Student's physical connection to the objects allowed them to access thinking about the experience and perspectives of the original owners.

An excellent range of primary evidence suitable for range of abilities, which is extremely useful in our learning environment as differentiation is a strong focus at our school. The hands on aspect of the kit increased learner engagement. The range of display material allows the kit to be shared in different learning settings. The kit is a culturally relevant resource suitable for our focus of culturally responsive pedagogy.

A user friendly resource that allows the students to learn digital literacy skills to find information out about the soldiers that fought in the war, and their story.

What did you notice about student engagement in the learning with the Walking with an ANZAC kit? We did it as our lead up to ANZAC Day and the artefacts gave us great discussion starters. It is much better to be able to touch the artefacts, rather than just looking at pictures of them. We have added some other things to the box.
What a great time we had using this box and discovering the stories within it. My year 4's found it hard to connect up the people with the artefacts, but gave it a good go. They loved being able to touch the artefacts and knowing they were from actual real people made it authentic and made them think more seriously about it all.

What did you notice about student engagement in the learning with the Walking with an ANZAC kit? Great student engagement. The objects created loads of discussion and lots of questions. Many children used these opportunities to talk about their own family members who had been to war etc.
An awesome kit! Loads of engagement with the different objects and a very good supporting website. I have a Year 4 class who found the content/reading a little challenging but understand that the kit was designed for Year 5 and above. Scaffolded them through and they were able to create a collaborative slideshow about a number of the people who owned the objects. Loads of great discussion was had!
