How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students were more aware of how they spoke to one another realising comments that they had previously made were of a racist.

“I loved this kit . Our class is yr 2-4 so most things were appropriate but some a little over the heads of the year 2's. It was a really thought provoking , some finding discrimination hard to understand but this kit helped . I think this kit would be rally useful for the beginning of the year.”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We built on a few initiatives our school has going - learning about a selected students country and its flag each week. We worked hard to respect the diversity in our classroom space and continued to focus on this.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Promoted more open discussion and gave the students the voice to stand up for what was right.

“We used some of the activites during our whanau hui time. The students really enjoyed the conversations and discussions that arose from the different activities. They loved the stereotype game and enjoyed playing this. This linked into our KiVa programme and Road to Sexuality programme that were being taught at the same time.”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Using ideas to forward plan for next year. This kit tied into our previous learning with the Kia Kaha Programme.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students learnt to be more accepting of others in regards to culture, colour, religion and unique differences.

“A great kit that helped our students understand the world around them in regards to acceptance. The activities were enjoyed by the kids. The discussions created more unity and acceptance of others opinions. There was a lot to cover so next time I would allow more time for more in depth learning in some areas.”

We made a pledge together to call our racism whenever we saw it and the students have shared a couple of incidents where they have observed and call

“Speaking out against racism has been an ongoing theme in our Y8 class since the March 15 attack rocked our hometown. We've completed a lot of activities watching and discussing videos featuring Taika Waititi, reading literature which challenging us to question whether we have our own inherent bias etc. This kit was a really great addition to this program and I whole heartedly recommend it.”

“I did not find this kit to be as helpful as I hoped but this was not the fault of the kit, it was more the coverage that we had done in class before the kit arrived! It was a Year 8 class”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Help to reinforce the diversity in our class, diversity is one of our school values so it was good to have a resource dedicated to this.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It changed the children, not the classroom. Children were more accepting of each others' ideals and values and were more willing to learn more about each other's culture and customs.

“Great resource kit, For my class, ideally would have been better to implement in the beginning of the year. It did help reinforce diversity ideals in the class.”
