What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It came at a time where there was a little bit of conflict with some of our girls being a little disrespectful towards a student from another culture. It reviewed some of our Term 1 classroom community and taonga.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Our main focus was on stereotyping, and how negative this can be. We all do it, and children were able to talk about examples they've seen and heard from their whanau. We aim to stop negative stereotyping in our thinking, our talk, and our actions.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Our environment is a caring, respectful, safe and happy one, so there has been no change. The children loved the giving and receiving of compliments, though. Thank you!

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plan allowed us a chance to really look and reflect on where we were as a classroom and how/what needed changing or focusing on.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? I think the most noticeable change was outside of the classroom, in the wider school environment and overhearing how they interacted and dealt with others in a social setting. It changed the way in which they discuss ideas and people and each other .... n

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We have had a lot of sickness in the last few weeks so will be carrying on with this next term. The children were wanting to focus more on giving compliments based on character traits.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The children are more aware of inward capabilities and strengths rather than physical appearance. We have learned to be more accepting of differences and understood that everyone has their own strengths and talents.

“The children have loved talking and learning about stereotypes. We decided not to look further into difference ethnicities as the class are very inclusive of all races and I felt that it would actually cause more upset than good.”

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The students have been more thoughtful about the words they are using. They are also more confident to speak out when they feel something they have heard or seen is not right.

“I found the children were very aware of the different stereotypes around them however were unsure how to go about challenging these when they arose. My students developed a greater understanding of the diversity in our classroom through the learning from this kit. It has also helped them to identify their own assumptions that may have been misguided. They absolutely loved the compliments activity. Thank you for this thought provoking kit. Sorry I didn’t take many photos!”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We have had many discussions. We have had students pulling each other up on use of language within the class, and that is now filtering out into the playground to other students. It has gone home and I have had parents discussing this with me.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? More awareness. We were always very culturally inclusive, but now more aware of stereotyping and racism, which is a big thing for 8-9 year olds

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Made students aware of the different cultures in the classroom.

“Not part of my world kit was awesome to get students thinking about who is important to them and where we all come from. Students became more accepting of others. Unfortunately, this topic was very similar to another we had done previously in the year which meant it didn't have as much impact as intended. But if I was to redo either topic I would combine the ideas as lots of great activities to include in the classroom.”
