“Unfortunately, because of the Covid pandemic things didn't go the way I had planned and we only worked on the research about whales and albatrosses. This fitted in with our topic. We read the I am a story book together and talked about the power of stories. I am planning to use the kit further in term 3 and 4. Thank you for your work.”

“The children really enjoyed the relationship kit, they often use the recharging station. I found that some of the content in there was a little bit tricky for them and struggled to work through it all.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? It allowed for a cultural context, dance and drama, literacy, visual arts, and numeracy. It was incredibly open for cross-curricular and a great cultural context.

“This kit was very broad, with a lot of different options. It could apply to the context given and other contexts. We used some of this kit with a context of a story we were already doing. There was fabulous ideas and resources to use that could be used for lots of different reasons. We loved the dice! The kids found them so fun and empowered them - also was great to learn about questions and answers. We really enjoyed the poem, it was great to explore alliteration and the sound of s and then sh. We did comic strips and they had sooo much fun doing this working together. It was a good way for the tamariki to retell the story in their own way. The email with ways to use the kit were really helpful.”

“Sadly I haven’t been able to use my Exploring Kit since school has resumed – we’ve been busy reestablishing ourselves in my class, for which the Respectful Relationships Kit has been brilliant (I’ll use the proper forum to provide my feedback on that). I’m happy to provide you with some feedback The Exploring Kit – I feel like I saw that this was ok somewhere, but I can’t find where. I am really looking forward to using the kit next year. I love the focus on oral storytelling and it’s validity, and in a time of worldwide protests against racism, it feels right (it reminds me very much of the Patricia Grace short story Butterflies, which I think every teacher trainee should be made to read). Aside from the overall concept, the parts I like best about the kit are the story dice (so many other uses!!!), the questioning cards (also many uses – a 5 minute “I wonder” filler), and the STEM cards, which would be the perfect extension activity for more able students. If I had a wish, it would be that the website had explanatory captions underneath each video clip, really short – eg Journey of an Albatross would suffice, it would just save a little bit of time as we’re deciding which clips to use, or in which order. Yes, I know I should watch every clip first, but I don’t always have time! Thanks again for producing such wonderful resources for us – I really appreciate it, and it’s such a shame that a blimmen virus got in the way of me using it when I was meant to. I will definitely be using it next year though (assuming we have no further apocalyptic events to contend with!).”
