“Unfortunately, because of the Covid pandemic things didn't go the way I had planned and we only worked on the research about whales and albatrosses. This fitted in with our topic. We read the I am a story book together and talked about the power of stories. I am planning to use the kit further in term 3 and 4. Thank you for your work.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? It allowed for a cultural context, dance and drama, literacy, visual arts, and numeracy. It was incredibly open for cross-curricular and a great cultural context.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I liked the open format of the kit because it allowed us to have our own spin on it using the resources and incorporate it into what we are already doing in our classrooms. It didnt take extra time or extra planning.

“This kit was very broad, with a lot of different options. It could apply to the context given and other contexts. We used some of this kit with a context of a story we were already doing. There was fabulous ideas and resources to use that could be used for lots of different reasons. We loved the dice! The kids found them so fun and empowered them - also was great to learn about questions and answers. We really enjoyed the poem, it was great to explore alliteration and the sound of s and then sh. We did comic strips and they had sooo much fun doing this working together. It was a good way for the tamariki to retell the story in their own way. The email with ways to use the kit were really helpful.”

“A lovely resource with very open ended ideas. It would have been better to have the full story of Kupe and the albatross rather than the retold version as this was hard for younger students to understand. We intended to take a tuakana-teina approach but unfortunately due to COVID-19 and getting too many kits I wasn't able to make full use of the great resource. I will use it throughout the rest of the year as time allows”

How did you find the open format of this kit? I love the idea of cross curricula units but somehow didn't gel too well with this one like I have for others. Thanks for the opportunity to try it and there are components (like question dice, Stem) that we can reuse.

“The children really enjoyed the relationship kit, they often use the recharging station. I found that some of the content in there was a little bit tricky for them and struggled to work through it all.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I was looking forward to adding the drama and dance back into my term but felt the kids needed to familiarise themselves with their peers to perform freely. I had to rethink my approach and start again with rebuilding trust in the classroom.

“Unfortunetly we didn't get time to use this kit before Covid-19, however I have implemented parts of it into my reading groups. It provides so much NZ history which I love and wanted to use your very well thought out resources as best I could on our return. I have been using another kit to help settle us back into the routine and culture of school, 'Respectful relationships'. I hope to continue using the exploring kit and utilise the resources provided.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Dancing and Drama- We used the music to create and explore dance and Drama, Writing and Reading -The children started to bring in stories they had about explorers.

“This Kit was fabulous and it was a shame the term came to such an abrupt end because we were just getting started. From the physical resources to the teacher guide and plans it was fantastic. I loved its openness and flexibility this allowed me to fit it in with our classes needs and use it in my own way. The picture map was my classes favourite- it is still on display and the children still use it to tell stories and come up with writing ideas, They are still coming to me and letting me know they have discovered something new about it. Another favourite was exploring through music, dance and Drama. We love the music ideas and even created our own Spotify playlist that the class always asks to do their dances to. I have shared this kit with my team and they have used it in varying ways which shows how flexible it is. Thank you for this great learning opportunity”
