“Very cool kit and most of my class enjoyed it. I have a wide variety of abilities and some struggled with different activities but that’s to be expected. Overall we love using the kits and have lots of fun learning in different ways.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? science - space, social studies early settlers in NZ both Maori and immigrants, maths - time lines, english - oral lan gauge, art - art from exploring ideas

“Initially we thought it was about explorers to NZ. But then we went deeper into what makes an explorer. What makes a person what to explore? What would we want to explore? Mountains, oceans, space or even just Aotearoa.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? I was looking forward to adding the drama and dance back into my term but felt the kids needed to familiarise themselves with their peers to perform freely. I had to rethink my approach and start again with rebuilding trust in the classroom.

How did you find the open format of this kit? The Teacher resource breakdown that came after receiving the kit, was very useful and helped to answer some outstanding questions I had. I found the direction gave me confidence to know how I could use the resource. Thank you so much for all you do.

“Unfortunetly we didn't get time to use this kit before Covid-19, however I have implemented parts of it into my reading groups. It provides so much NZ history which I love and wanted to use your very well thought out resources as best I could on our return. I have been using another kit to help settle us back into the routine and culture of school, 'Respectful relationships'. I hope to continue using the exploring kit and utilise the resources provided.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Dancing and Drama- We used the music to create and explore dance and Drama, Writing and Reading -The children started to bring in stories they had about explorers.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I love this! I was able to pick and choose what suited my classes needs and members in my team saw what we were doing and I was able to share the resources and they would come back teaching and using it in different ways.

“This Kit was fabulous and it was a shame the term came to such an abrupt end because we were just getting started. From the physical resources to the teacher guide and plans it was fantastic. I loved its openness and flexibility this allowed me to fit it in with our classes needs and use it in my own way. The picture map was my classes favourite- it is still on display and the children still use it to tell stories and come up with writing ideas, They are still coming to me and letting me know they have discovered something new about it. Another favourite was exploring through music, dance and Drama. We love the music ideas and even created our own Spotify playlist that the class always asks to do their dances to. I have shared this kit with my team and they have used it in varying ways which shows how flexible it is. Thank you for this great learning opportunity”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We read the poem and used discussion cards for writing. We enjoyed the STEAM cards. We tried the art but I didn't see the link.

How did you find the open format of this kit? I found this kit difficult to use. I wasn't aware of the online resources to begin with. Once I found them, we were unable to use the music files. I found the activities enjoyable, although I struggled with the link between some activities

“I found this kit more difficult to use, as it was my first open kit. The activities were interesting but we found the online links troublesome. We enjoyed the stories and the map. We created some family art, however this was an activity that I didn't understand as a teacher.”
