What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Where some of the fruit trees are in our neighbourhood, especially ones on Public land.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We already compost, but I think the kit made the students aware of what they were doing with their lunch waste.
This kit was engaging for the students. We put the map of our area up on the classroom wall and did a virtual 60 minute walk. The students worked in groups to write the 60 minute circle poem. We then combined all the group poems into one class poem. The interviews at the school gate asking parents what they had for lunch was a great task. A chance to practice interview skills. We then used the data we collected in our Maths Statistics work. The results were very interesting. I really liked the Dinner cards, but I didn't get as much buy in from the class with this activity. The part of the kit that really grabbed their attention was the produce section. I had each student donate an old vegetable. We then produced a class soup. The kids loved this and they brought along a bread roll to dip in their soup. The flavour of the soup was determined by the veges the kids brought along. Luckily, we had a really good variety. As the term came to an end we didn't get to do the pickling, but it is something I would be keen to do later this year, if time allowed.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? Very hands on and interactive. We were able to collaborate with another classroom and develop our own specific understanding of what food waste 'really' looked like. Being a hands on kit really gives a fresh persepctive to what we do as a school.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? That we had a variety of trees that produced edible fruit, that we could have used and saved, instead of going to waste. We then looked further around for Red Zone trees (ChCh) that we could utilise.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are starting our own orchard and have recently planted our fruit trees that we will be able to use in the coming years. Education provides opportunities for prevention.
The kids enjoyed the kit as they were able to create their own recipes and moved in a direction that suited them. Tailored to suit a variety of needs and capabilities in the class!

We enjoyed bringing food into the classroom. Together we made pickled cucumbers, bread and icecream. Some of the activities were quite complex and although I'm an experienced teacher I could not tailor many things for my class. The format of the guides was not something I have used before and I found it tricky to navigate. I found myself making a lot of tasks up instead, perhaps because there wa snot as much support as I had hoped for in the kit. I think my planning format is a lot more direct: objective - task - breakdown. The kit was a little harder to follow. I used some of the activities and made up others. I spent a lot of time behind the scenes, upskilling on how to make a map, practicing tasks, walking the area, and I think what I am looking for in a kit is a time saver rather than something that takes more time to set up and research than the time spent teaching it. I wonder if the kit has been designed by a busy teacher? I am always very grateful for new ideas and teaching plans - but I wonder if they could be presented in a way that is more direct and easy to pick up and use.
