How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? The Good Food Map resource helped students see that food waste isn’t just something that happens at home — it’s a global issue with local impacts. They learned how wasted food affects farmers, communities, and the environment, and how making smarter choices locally, like using seasonal produce or sharing surplus food, can contribute to solving a much bigger problem. This connection between local actions and global consequences really deepened their understanding and sense of responsibility.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? The students’ top food waste ideas were creative and hands-on: composting scraps, turning leftovers into new meals, sharing unused food, and running fun “leftovers challenges.” They loved seeing how small actions at school and home can make a big difference for the planet. As well as establishing worms farms and feeding the chickens.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Through the Good Food Map activities, students noticed aspects of our community they hadn’t really seen before — like the abundance of avocado and kiwi orchards, nearby dairy farms, and local food producers. The discovery was sparked by mapping exercises and discussions about where food comes from, helping them connect their daily choices to the local environment and see the importance of supporting sustainable practices. As well as all the beehives and honey being produced in the coromandel.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes! The Good Food Map kit has sparked several new food-related initiatives in our school. Students have taken the lead as lunch monitors, helped set up worm farms and compost systems, cared for chickens, and even contributed to developing fruit forests. The kit has inspired hands-on action, turning learning about sustainable food into real projects that benefit our school and the environment.
Using the Good Food Map kit with my school Enviro Group every Tuesday and Thursday has been fantastic. The activities are engaging, hands-on, and perfectly suited to exploring local food systems and sustainability. Students loved tracking where their food comes from and identifying healthier, more environmentally-friendly choices. It sparked meaningful discussions about seasonal produce, waste reduction, and supporting local growers. Overall, the kit has been a practical, fun way to help students connect with food, the environment, and their role as conscious consumers.

As always the kits are meticulously planned out, taking away some of the burden of planning & teaching. The children I’ve taught since I’ve been using the kits are always blown away by the things we do.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? for our class at least, we tried to brainstorm some ideas on how to reduce food waste within our class and our household
Our class really enjoyed making pickles. It was a different and engaging experience, and students were able to compare different types of pickles. They especially enjoyed learning that you can pickle more than just cucumbers.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? I don't think we got to that part...
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Again, we didn't really get there? We read about other solutions but we couldn't really come up with our own.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? No
Food is a good way to engage learners and it was fun exploring our community using it. We didn't have time to explore different ways to reduce food waste in our own community but it was interesting looking at how other countries do it. Our simple food waste ideas were fun to do too. I wanted learners to be able to think bigger about how to reduce food waste but we just did the individual ways on how to reduce food waste in homes. We went to our local mall to look at different food wastage so didn't get the opportunity to see food being produced 'on the ground'.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? It has made our students more aware of the need to reduce waste. We will look to pick this idea up next year with our students leading a project to reduce waste.
Good Food Map is a highly engaging, inquiry-rich resource that invites students to explore their community through the lens of food, food systems, and food waste. The kit supports students to make meaningful connections between local observations and global challenges, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through mapping, discussion, and prototyping, students are empowered to see themselves as active participants in addressing food waste rather than passive observers.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Worm farming
The Good Food Map provided an excellent array of goodies to promote the impact of food waste in our environment as well as some solutions to help combat this. My students developed a greater awareness and appreciation for the resources that go into making and growing food, as well as where in the world many of the everyday things they eat come from. They became more conscious of their own food waste and the Good Food Map offered lots in the way of making use of and preserving food in different ways to limit waste.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? We kept our learning to a local issue and linked it to our school lunches as well.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? The students loved the piccalilli, we now have a worm farm and we are working on less lunch box waste as an idea to carry forward to next year.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? We have an egg farm just down the road, which hardly any students knew about. We found it when we were looking at our map.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Worm farm, less lunchbox waste (ongoing), making our own pickles is way cheaper!
This was another fabulous kit. The students enjoyed doing the circle walk poem and brainstorming all of the food sources we have around our school. It made the students more aware of where we are, who our neighbours are, and what food is produced in our area. They enjoyed putting the stickers on our giant map, and that really hooked them in to finding out more about our local area. We also made some piccallili as part of our learning about reducing food waste. The students did the maths as to how much money we saved by making our own.
