Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes, soup lunches.
Students were interested in this concept and loved making and sharing the soup. However, as our school is situated in a rural area we couldn't do the walk around and there are no food retailers. Lots of farms though! Students struggled to find people who were born pre 1950s.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are working with an outisde provider next term to address this issue.
This kit supported our learning about healthy eating as part of the Food for Thought programme, which is backed by the Heart Foundation. The focus was on helping students understand how to read food labels. The Good Food Map kit is a highly relevant resource in today’s world, promoting awareness around food choices and nutrition. It was hands-on, engaging, and encouraged active participation from the children. The kit also has strong potential to be integrated across other curriculum areas, including science, health, and literacy.

We used Good Food Map kit to help us kick off our unit on reducing food waste. The 5km map activity prior and post were really useful for connecting to our community and the dinner survey was a great whanau link that got children thinking. The recipe cards were really useful too.

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? With my group we only touched on this lightly but there were plenty of resources in the kit and that I found to support this focus.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? This was done with my Resistant Materials teacher - he had the students make their food waste solutions - one made a set of shelves where food waste of different sizes sat and could then fall through to the next layer.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? it really got them thinking about the different food sources in their community and particularly in their school environment. They were shocked and horrified at the lack of recycling and minimising of food waste that companies such as McDonalds do.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes! We are setting the students a holiday homework challenge to identify and cook a family favourite recipe and then we will create a Team CookbooK!
Good Food Map was a great inquiry into different foods. In todays fast-paced instant-world, fast food and prepackaged food is quick, and easy and this unit helped to gently teach the class about how healthy foods can be yum too.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Many of our international students were not aware that you could grow fruit and veges locally in a container as small as a bucket (tomatoes, potatoes). Many of them thought you needed a whole farm.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Small garden club that makes soup to be frozen for the kids that forget their lunch in winter.
Our students loved the Good Food Map kit! It was hands-on, visually engaging, and sparked rich discussions about where our kai comes from. We used it as a cross-curricular inquiry across science, health, and social studies — it really brought learning to life. A real highlight was seeing kids link their lunchboxes to local food regions, which also led to great kōrero with whānau about traditional kai and sustainability. The resources are super teacher-friendly and adaptable. Highly recommend for any school wanting fun, meaningful, Aotearoa-based learning.
