“We began this project by creating good memories and discussing least favorite moments, which led to meaningful conversations about the children’s future plans for improving the environment as they grow up. Lunchboxes were checked by kaitiaki monitors, and we were fortunate to have the Auckland Council Food Scrap Bin Promotion Team visit our school. Although the busyness of the final term limited how deeply we could explore the topic, the children enjoyed the lessons and took pride in educating their families.”

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? No. Unfair to comment. But,our school does have chickens. Food wrapping is a big issue.

“Badly timed on my behalf. In term 2 or three this could have been much better. I did not get into it as assesment took a front seat. Walking around our country neighbourhood would be a bigger undertaking than the author considered. Too much health & safety red tape for the farms.”

What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? One group made flavoured ice cubes that could be used to make drinks. Each cube made one drink. Great way to use up lemons and mint.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? There were a lot of market gardens and they learnt how they provide free food for all their workers. They also had to ask local businesses to source some food which could be preserved. This was fun.

“This was the first time I have used one of these resources so it was hard to navigate. I found it was a good starting point but many of the resources didnt suit our environment. I was able to change and adapt things. It was also hard as the structure of the school didnt allow for enough time to get activities completed. (This is not a reflection on the kit)”

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Noticing the amount of fruit trees. Using a map of the local area and going for walks on the little side streets.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? As we only started this project in Term 4 the students came up with this idea for next year. People to bring in any excess food they have growing in their gardens that the students can use to make preserves with. This can be then given away to local food banks.

“I work with year 11 &12 learning support students with varying learning needs. Our class volunteers at a local community garden and this resource complimented our lesson well. We were able to use produce from our community garden and school garden to use in the activities. The activies also made the students more aware of where food comes from and how much food there is in our local community.”

What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Pickling, freezing, baking, give to family, friends, kindergartens.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The Salvation Army near by receives food donations and passes on to the less fortunate.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Our families donate food every year, which the students take to the Salvation Army, before Christmas. We freeze vegetables from our school garden as well as share cooked food.

“My ESOL students loved this kit. Surprisingly some of the dinner menu food was similar to Maori food from back in the 1950s. Even though the students have 'pickle' in their country, they didnt like our pickles. Their food tends to have more spice and less 'sour'. They didnt want to make pickled vegetables for this reason although we will still give it a go. Having English as a second language makes the kits extra interesting to my students and we always have to have lots of visuals to enable the students to understand.”

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not so far, although with the conversation now happening maybe next year we can try something.

“The class really enjoyed finding out where our food comes from. The shock after they researched our area and found out how much food used to be produced here (and how little is produced now) was palpable. They found making (and eating) soup a lot of fun. We added in some herbs that we grew in class for a garden to table experience.”

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? How their own whānau contribute to food production- we are in a farming community, where does the milk go after the tanker picks it up etc.

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Yes, we are currently working on problem solving around food waste at school.

“We recieved the Good Food Map at the beginning of Term 4 this year. The kit has some beautiful, hands-on activities. Our school is in a rural setting, and therefore, some of the activities, particularly the beginning activities were quite difficult to activate with a limited amount of time.”
