Because one group in my class was undertaking this learning other groups decided that they also wanted to engage in 'inquiry' STEAM type learning. One group decided to design a leaf cutter bee hive. Another group ran/started a business to use up left over

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? Yes, after the kit I have taught naval flags to another group of learners who find learning difficult because of the engagement and thinking component.

“I originally ordered the Jean Batten kit for my whole class but changed it to a group of 8 (literacy group) because I found that I wanted to push the problem solving/code cracking skills with a smaller group, rather than a larger one, so I could manage it more effectively. This worked and I was able to support the group during their guided learning sessions. They were successful with my support and the teacher guide, otherwise some of the code cracking activities may have been too difficult or caused frustration with the group. The group enjoyed the challenges with the correct amount of teacher support. They felt proud of their work and kept a modelling book with all of their learning. At the end of the learning the whole class took part in the thunder storm and the buzz planes to feel a connection to what the literacy group had been doing.”

In what ways did the kit allow development of strategic thinking for your students? Having to work together to find clues was a great challenge to over come. Team work and developing strategies for getting the plane to fly straight was a great lesson in refining ideas and perseverance.

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? I had a few moments of being not sure what to do, but no I be went back to the manual and be was be fine sticking to be the content. I think I should have done all sessions in one day to keep the flow.

“Korimako year 5s Enjoyed the STEM elements of the kits which encouraged some real problem solving to get the buzz planes going. We split the activities over four sessions which segwayed off into studies of different countries and ways of communicating. Great way to spark conversation about then versus now.”

In what ways did the kit allow development of strategic thinking for your students? By making and then adapting both paper planes and buzz planes, students had to think about their goal and how to achieve it.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This kit made me want to overhaul everything that I do and recreate it around hands on experiences like this one. We went on to do procedural writing about paper planes and physics experiments looking at alterations that make them fly better.
