“I teach 5 year olds. They loved the badges and worked hard to earn one. They were able to plant their own seeds and have taken ownership of caring for their plant. We will transfer them to the school garden. As a teacher I appreciate getting such a useful resource. It was easy to get it and it arrived quickly. As I said earlier we have used this as a lead up to our Zespri healthy eating and fitness challenge in term 4 and it was a great addition to our local heroes inquiry - we had farmers as a hero, so the reality of the children understanding that the farmer

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The children are keen to take their learning home and grow veges at home. They have the prior knowledge and understanding of what taking care of them now means and what that entails before you can eat them.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students have more idea about nutritional value and even learning about the names and look of different vegetables compared to the ones that they are used to.

“Little Garden was just amazing! We have done this in conjunction with the Zespri healthy eating and fitness challenge so it has been a great build up. My class loved the secret code cracking and the responsibility of managing a plant and being responsible for it and tracking its progress.”

“This was an amazing kit that really engaged the kids and got them excited about gardening and growing. Many of the vegetables were ones the kids had not heard of before. The process of planting the seeds and watching them grow was so exciting, the class were eagerly checking the progress of 'their' seed each day before they were able to take them home over the holidays to continue monitoring their progress. This 'theme' of kit opened up a lot of opportunities to discuss healthy eating, why it's important to know what we eat, and other areas like the water cycle and why plants need water.”

“I think that the pack is fabulous - every child is able to grow their own plant which we are going to plant into our school vegetable garden! The kids are very excited about it. We are just getting started as the timing of the start date was not great (due to COVID) as the seedlings need constant attention and watering, I didnt want them to die over the school holidays. The students will love being code crackers and wearing their gardener badge with pride. It is great that the codes were downloadable to allow flexibility in timing.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Greater uptake of children interested in school enviro group. More noticing of flowers and plants around the school.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We were more focused on ";what a plant needs to survive"; rather than nutrition, but we did talk a lot about which vegetables we liked. As a class we made stone soup and everyone tried some, which would not have happened before using this kit.

“The children loved planting out the seedlings and checking they weren't too dry daily. Once big enough we transplanted them to the small garden outside our classroom. They spent ages decoding the messages and liked the idea of a club and their special badges - even the reluctant participants chose to join in rather than miss out on a badge.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have had our bark covered gardens in front of classrooms returned to soil so that we can continue with more garden planting.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Children shared their ideas of what they think are healthy and unhealthy foods and identified the healthy foods in their lunchboxes.

“The children really enjoyed planting the seedlings and watching them sprout and grow. The Vege Patch Matching game was really popular and we incorporated it into our pre-literacy workshops. Cracking the secrets codes was also really popular. We are so happy that we signed up for this - a great resource for our new entrants team, thank you!”
