In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We measured the plants (maths) we talked about heath and nutrition (PE) we talked about agriculture and farming (social sciences, science) and read more about the plants and then wrote about our plants (literacy)

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I think the ideas are enough, you don't want to overload the teachers as it will become 'another thing' they have to do int heir day! I think the essence of the learning was the special part!

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children were made aware that the vegetables they have in their lunches and dinners are from a tiny seed! We talked about how anything that comes from nature always has something beneficial in it for our bodies.

“These worked in so well with our Agriculture day focus at our school. The kids were working hard bringing up their own animals so adding this as a class activity was the perfect timing!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We've integrated as much as possible with all learning. See above.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We can use our kitchen as school more often to cook. We have a Neat Beets gardening group and a number of students are keen to join now. We have veges in the school garden ready for harvest next term.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Oh it's been fantastic. We have learnt more about vegetables and trying new foods too.

We have enjoyed seeing the plants grow. We have learned Maori names for vegetables. We have loved cracking the codes each week. In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Loads of reading and writing and art, linked to te Reo also. Maths was great with measuring and looking at capacity.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Planting and caring for plants. Looking at our enviro garden and the future use of planted veges like cooking and donating to local Salvation Army.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Discussions around healthy eating and choices, it is hard to say if they take these discussions home.

“Brilliant hands on gardening and knowledge building about seeds and growing seedlings. Excellent selection of seeds to discuss and look at different plants and their uses. Overall has been extremely positive with my year 0/1 class.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths - statistics. Counting how many grew and the time they took to germinate. They also drew pictures of them. Researched extra information on how vegetables are processed and cooked via internet.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Making food and lunches at school. Using some of the extra plants from the supermarket to grow in class and then send home for the students to plant them. Many had no idea how to plant vegetables and what to expect. We have planted ours out into the schoo

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They are now interested in vegetables and have learnt how to plant and grow them. The link to having them in food is evident.

“Brilliant resource. The kids loved it. We have been learning about all the different types of foliage and root structures. The badges are very cool and they are extremely proud of them.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? In their writing they wrote about how they were going to eat their vegetable. For example one boy wrote he would put chives in his scrambled eggs, another said she would make a salad with her lettuce.

“My year one students have been so engaged throughout the whole process. We have had some wonderful descriptive writing. Thank you on behalf of myself and the class for a great kit!!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? There was a huge deal of reading and maths involved in growing these vegetables - reading instructions, reading messages, measuring plants and measuring water! It also helped with the social sciences - roles and responsibilities.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Opportunities for future learning: roles and responsibilities, sustainability, health. As a follow up, next term I want to focus on those aforementioned topics.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? By growing vegetables themselves, the children have definitely fostered a love and appreciation of vegetables.

“The Little Garden League was an exciting learning opportunity for my entire class. The children never ceased to talk about it from the beginning. The resources were incredible, and the coded messages were an exciting activity to look forward to. The content definitely encouraged children to love and appreciate vegetables more!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? The kit has fit with our inquiry of Hauora very well. Allowing us to connect and interlink plants and humans and showing the similar things that we need to grow and develop.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Children have been talking about building their own gardens and introducing different vegetables at home to the whole family.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children here at school are fantastic and trying new healthy food as we have garden to table here at school, however it has added value because our junior school is now able to be involved by providing more yummy vegetables to grow in our garden.

“What a fantastic resource. It fits well within our garden to table resource here at Cannons Creek School. It supports our younger children to care for our environment and be mindful of what a plant needs to grow. My class have made the connection that plants are very similar to us as people. We have been learning about emotions in class and I have seen children talking to the plants to provide encouragement for it to grow. I have seen great leadership in caring for our garden. We are now at the point where we are moving the plants to our greenhouse. It has been a wonderful experience for the class. The children really enjoyed the songs and stories that were provided and the secret messages became part of our writing lessons. Thank you very much.”
