In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Science, math, literacy, KCs.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have planted some of our seedlings in the school veggie garden so are continuing to nurture them and watch them grow. We are looking forward to letting some go to seed so we can continue to learn about life cycles.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? With parental support we tried a few recipes with veggies which most kids enjoyed tasting.

“What an amazing kit. My class absolutely loved the opportunity to plant and watch their seeds grow, it was a joy to watch! . Through this learning we explored life-cycles of different plants as well as the conditions needed to sustain life. There was also great opportunities for math, writing and cooperation. As we ended up with extra seed packs due to a small class and extras from a parent the students were able to plant one of their seedlings at school in our garden and take one home.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children learnt about some new vegetables they haven't seen before. The amount of vegetables in their lunchboxes grew!

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This linked really well with out Garden to Table program. We were able to plant some of our seeds in our school garden and watch them grow. Some have even been harvested!

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have lots of interest in continuing our school vegetable garden. The children are writing a pitch to our principal about having a class plot to take care of.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It has helped grow knowledge and understanding around different plants, and the ongoing commitment to take care of living things. We have had lots of feedback from whānau around how these plants are going at home, and children trying new vegetables.

“We enjoyed the story behind this kit. The children loved taking on the responsibility to be a Little Garden League Member and loved the top secret mission. The resources were amazing! We really liked the range of learning, from code cracking, to learning filled videos. The kit provided fantastic learning that has continued long after the timeframe.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Written language was relevant and related to topic e.g. describing different vegetables, instructions for planting their little garden, recording results etc. Mathematics e.g. talking about costs of vegetables, measuring growth etc Physical Education- o

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Research into other plants that could be planted e.g. potatoes. Class cooking activities using the fully grown plants from the school gardens. Visiting new just opened garden center in Te Aroha with related learning.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children trialed different vegetables and many found that some they had not eaten before tasted nice. Parent feedback was very positive. Classroom lunches appear to have less packet food and more fresh fruit particularly with our Tongan families.

“The children got very involved and have already eaten the radishes. It was an excellent unit. All the staff got involved and purchased New World groceries to get more Little Gardens. Several teachers with their own children started gardens at home to help encourage their own children to eat more vegetables.”
