In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We linked it into our inquiry the best we could. Writing about our new found knowledge, reading stories on plant growth in journals and science activities. We looked at the plant and it's parts and how it grows. We looked at photosynthesis on a basic leve

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have some planter boxes outside our class that we are looking to fill next year. This ignite that again. The students are very keen to continue to grow and care for plants and then use the food we grow in the classroom to cook meals to share. Thankyou

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our class did a few short lessons on healthy eating but I believe the greatest learning was that they could grow their own food.

“Our class thoroughly enjoyed this kit. It was a amazing learning tool. I was surprised to find that many students had never experienced planting and they lacked understanding on how plants grow. This meant there was lots of learning to be had. We also tied this in with planting natives along the coast near the school and the understanding they gained from the little garden kit was evident. They happily shared their experience with others during the planting and mulching experience. When the plants were big enough to take home, the students were extremely excited to show them off to their whanau. It was a fabulous experience and they students were thrilled to receive them.”

Written language was relevant and related to topic e.g. describing different vegetables, instructions for planting their little garden, recording results etc. Mathematics e.g. talking about costs of vegetables, measuring growth etc Physical Education- o

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Research into other plants that could be planted e.g. potatoes. Class cooking activities using the fully grown plants from the school gardens. Visiting new just opened garden center in Te Aroha with related learning.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children trialed different vegetables and many found that some they had not eaten before tasted nice. Parent feedback was very positive. Classroom lunches appear to have less packet food and more fresh fruit particularly with our Tongan families.

“The children got very involved and have already eaten the radishes. It was an excellent unit. All the staff got involved and purchased New World groceries to get more Little Gardens. Several teachers with their own children started gardens at home to help encourage their own children to eat more vegetables.”
