In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We do play based learning so I linked this kit to my science and nature corner. The students enjoyed getting their hands dirty and planting their own vegetable/ herb.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This can be linked with Life Education where we can choose the topic of healthy eating.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The students have been exposed to new names of herbs, they have had the opportunity to share their experiences with fellow class mates if they have tried some of the herbs.

They were able to learn about the different nutrients in vegetables and learn about eating a rainbow. Many of our students now have tried and liked

“What a fantastic resource. Thanks soo much school kit and New world. My class really got excited about this kit and especially loved the third clue- be brave! We had to taste test, and use our senses to write descriptions about lots of different vegetables. We threw in some maths and created a graph showing our favourite vegetables. We especially loved finishing up with a blindfold taste testing session! We can’t wait for our seedlings to grow big enough to put out in the garden and then to harvest the huge selection of vegetables you have given us! This kit has reached most curriculum areas and given us the knowledge to grow our own at home and encouraged us to be brave to taste new things.”

Many children have been bringing vegetable snacks to school for their 'brain snack' in the morning. The children have been coming to school and talking

“The class have loved learning about the different vegetables and how to grow them. They have talked about it at home and got more little gardens to share with their families from New World. The little garden league was fantastic because it has a great school and family connection for the children. We are all looking forward to trying some new vegetables soon.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This is definitely learning that transfers well to the home environment! It has helped the children to instigate some wonderful conversations with their caregivers and whanau.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children are now more aware of what their food looks like and also the effort that goes into growing it!

“I teach Year 2s in Central Auckland. I love that you thought of supporting teachers and schools and were able to send the kit out so efficiently. For our school, our long term planning is done at least a term in advance so it can be hard to maximise resources like this at short notice. In the context of a term where we were focused on The Material World (chemistry), we weren't able to utilise the kit in the way that the resource envisages. However it was wonderful to use it as a writing prompt as the children love tactile, hands on learning and many don't get the opportunity to grow seeds at home with their families.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used this kit to extend our inquiry unit about the human body, as well as our te reo maori learning. The children have been learning about the te reo names for all the plants.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The kids are very interested in their bodies and what goes into them. They are keen on learning about food and how to prepare it, we are looking at doing more work on food preparation next term.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children are very excited about planting their plants and are very interested in what goes into their bodies. The kit has generated a lot of questions about healthy eating and has merged perfectly with our human body inquiry this term.

“I really loved this school kit as it tied in perfectly with our inquiry and our school gardens. The games and little plant pots were a lot of fun and really got my kids hooked into healthy eating!”
