“The process was great however some of the content was difficult for my aged children. It has been a great resource for children to learn to take care of vegetables and to learn about different types of vegetables. So children have not heard of or rated a lot of the vegetables in the pack. Thank you so much for the opportunity.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This will help us identify the needs for survival and how connected all life is in the environment

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They have been keen to learn the names and which are herbs or vegetables. They have collected extra ones from New World and are eager to finally taste them when they grow.

Healthy eating- 5 + A Day and Fredge stories (Fredge plants some seeds) Science- Living world: Growing and changing, Caring for living things Maths- Measurement:We measure how much water to give our plants each day and measure how tall they are growing.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Helping in the school garden to grow more vegetables The children are keen to learn about garden helpers especially Bees and Worms and how to stop the garden pests. After watching the Fredge video on the 5+ A day website they want to make scarecrows.

As mentioned above the kit has been great in getting the students to learn and talk about different fruit and vegetables, how they grow, how to look after them with many children talking to their whanau about having their own garden plot at home. “The children really loved the idea of The Little Garden League characters, their names in the photo and how they were helping to grow, protect and taste the vegetables. The children drew pictures about what they knew about planting and growing vegetables and their favourite vegetable. They practised their pledge and proudly wore their badges. What a great idea! We have a fantastic selection of plants now growing in the classroom and the children are diligently looking after them. We have watched timelapse videos about growing seeds and done lots of 5+ A day healthy eating activities too. We made a delicious fruit salad after reading Sharon Holt's 'He Huarakau' book too. The kit was such a great resource and really got the children excited about growing and learning about vegetables and fruit. Thank you!!!”

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We have used Maths with measuring the growth of our plants. We have written about our plants and what makes them grow - writing. The children have enjoyed reading the codes sent and cracking the code using sequencing.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This has linked really well into our Environmental Inquiry - and we have a school garden now as well that the children are most interested in planting.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Discussions have been had around what is healthy food and how there are a variety of different foods available for us to eat. Some children have also tried new vegetables!

Writing - we wrote about our plants and what a plant needs to grow. Inquiry - our environment - writing - drawing Oral Language - lots of discussion

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We now have an environmental garden which the children take more of an interest in.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Through discussion they are more willing to try new vegetables if they grow them themselves. Also gives them an awareness of healthy eating.
